ANSWERS to COMMON QUESTIONS
The FAQ is a "must read" for all trip participants!
More than twenty (20) trips which have preceded yours and your questions are most likely answered in the FAQ section below because someone has asked it before on an earlier trip.
Read the FAQ section throughly!
“Our days have been packed, our bellies are full, our feet are tired, our brains are expanded, our thoughts are soaring, our spirits are lifted, and we’ve made deep, lasting friendships with fellow travelers we’ve known only a few days.”
— A One-Sentence Trip Description
1. About the Trip
Who Is This Trip For?
Who is the target participant?
Our trips are designed for homeschooled Classical students, with a particular focus on Classical Conversations Challenge 3 & 4 (junior & senior) students. Students heading into Challenge 4 or recent Challenge 4 graduates will benefit most, as the trip provides firsthand experience of what they have recently studied or will be studying.
Students from any Christian homeschool program, classical school, Christian students from public schools, grads, and family members are all welcome.
Are family members and parents allowed?
Yes, with important qualifications. The trip is NOT designed as a private family vacation. Parents who join are asked to participate in the established itinerary along with the group. These are student-oriented trips in every aspect of design, lodging, scheduling, and purpose.
Families are welcome if the homeschooled student is also on the trip. Married couples with a student may attend but should be aware that lodging is not designed for couples, and additional charges apply for married couple accommodations when available.
NOTE: Please read the NOTE TO PARENTS page before signing up as a parent participant.
NOTE: "Helicopter" parents create a negative environment for others and limit the student learning experience. Students typically bond better and develop better socially when given freedom to explore safe sections of each city in approved groups without parental oversight.
What is the trip size?
Maximum 26 participants per trip is the standard cap. This limit is set by the logistics of public transportation, accessible lodging, and group dynamics.
Why only Italy, Greece, and Turkey?
The unique focus of ClassicalTrips.org is a classical approach to the ancient Greco-Roman world and its influence on Western civilization from a Christian perspective. Italy, Greece, and Turkey together cover the ancient world that shaped modern culture, early Christian church history, and the missionary journeys of the Apostle Paul. Whether your interest is Homer's world, Renaissance Florence, or the seven churches of Revelation, all three countries are significant locations in the ancient world.
Who leads the trip?
Greg Ford personally leads every trip. Greg has traveled in 100+ countries, led teams to Europe for over 20 years, directed Challenge 4 for eight years, and worked with high school and college students since 1988. Greg has a passion to see young adults walk in their full calling and potential as they impact their generation.
How long has ClassicalTrips been running?
Summer 2026 trips are the 16th year of ClassicalTrips, with over 20 classical trips completed. Greg and team have been taking groups overseas since 1988, traveling into 100 countries and coordinating hundreds of overseas groups.
Are ClassicalTrips leaders official or licensed tour guides?
No. ClassicalTrips leaders are not official or licensed tour guides. They serve primarily as trip leaders, educators, vision champions, knowledge keepers, motivation masters, dot connectors, and thought provokers who help students understand the historical, cultural, and Christian significance of the places we visit. In some locations, especially where it is required or especially beneficial, we may use official local guides, such as at the Vatican. We are not after a pile of facts. We want to find the moral, ethical, and inspirational stories that will stick with you.
What if I don’t know anyone joining the trip?
Perfect. You’ll fit right in. 😄 A lot of students show up not knowing a single person. By Day Two, you’ll be navigating subway systems together, sharing gelato, and remembering everyone’s names. By Day Five, you’ll have inside jokes. And by the end of the trip, you’ll be wondering how these people became “your tribe” so fast.
There’s something about getting lost in a foreign city, walking 8–10 miles a day, and standing in places you’ve only read about that accelerates friendships in a big way.
Plus, we make it easy:
• You’ll have a small room group
• Everyone has a role (which helps break the ice fast)
• Tons of shared time, meals, experiences, and conversations
Bottom line: you might show up alone, but you won’t stay that way for long.
2. Trip Application & Sign-Up
How to Apply
How do I sign up?
ClassicalTrips uses ManagedMissions software for all trip sign-ups, payments, and form tracking.
-
Create an account at ClassicalTrips.ManagedMissions.com.
-
Select your desired trip.
-
Await approval. ClassicalTrips staff will review your application and send a confirmation email within a few days.
-
A $120 non-refundable deposit is required at the time of sign-up.
What are the account requirements?
-
Each traveler must create a separate ManagedMissions account.
-
Each account requires a unique email address.
-
No family accounts are allowed.
-
Use an email address you can access during the trip overseas.
-
Use a different email address for each person if two people from the same family are on the trip
NOTE: Example: If both a parent and a student are attending, they must each create separate accounts with different email addresses. The same email cannot be used for both.
NOTE: Parents are always copied in Emails to their student
Trip Priority & Acceptance
How are spots assigned for summer trips?
Spots are approved based on Trip Priority, Participant Preference, and Purpose:
Trip Priority:
-
3-Country Trip applicants (Italy-Greece-Turkey) have the highest priority.
-
2-Country and 1-Country applicants are placed on a waitlist until two weeks after the first payment deadline for the 3-Country Trip (typically mid-December).
-
After that deadline, any spots held without the first payment are released to wait-listed applicants.
Participant Preference:
-
Student participants have priority over adult/parent participants.
-
An individual parent of a student traveler has higher priority than both parents attending together, due to lodging design.
Trip Purpose:
These trips are educational and ministry-focused for students, not structured as family vacations.
Is there a waiting list?
Possibly. If a trip fills, we maintain a waiting list. If space opens due to schedule changes or other factors, we fill it on a first-come, first-served basis. Trip size caps at 26.
Can I join last minute?
Possibly, but it often costs more. Intra-European airfare and lodging are purchased months in advance. Adding someone after those purchases typically means higher airfare and lodging rates, and those costs are passed on to the late addition. Entrance fees are usually unaffected. If you are able to fly on slightly different flights than the group, your added cost may be minimal.
Payments
Is there a payment schedule?
Yes. Trip payment is divided into 4 scheduled payments before the trip. Details are on the PAYMENTS page on the website.
NOTE: Trip payments made through ManagedMissions post in your ManagedMissions account in 1-2 days.
What if I miss a payment deadline?
If costs have increased due to adding you in after the group's air or lodging purchases, those additional costs will be added to your total. Contact the ClassicalTrips office if you anticipate missing a deadline.
3. Airfare & International Travel
Your Airfare
Is airfare included?
No. Participants are responsible for purchasing their own international airfare to and from Europe. The posted trip price covers all travel between your arrival in Europe (usually Rome) and your departure from Europe (usually Istanbul). We are happy to advise on flight options and coordinate arrival times with other participants. See the Why Not Airfare page.
When should I depart the USA?
The trip Start Date listed on the website is your arrival date in Europe. You will need to depart the USA one day earlier.
Example: A trip listed as May 29-June 17 means you depart the USA on May 28, arrive in Europe on May 29, depart Europe on June 17, and arrive in the USA on June 17 (you lose a day flying to Europe and gain a day returning).
What are the recommended arrival times?
Recommended arrival times in Rome or Athens are between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Upon arrival to the airport, you will not be left on your own. We will meet you at the arrival airport.
Passports & Visas
What are the passport requirements?
A valid passport is required for all international travel. Your passport must be valid for 6 months AFTER the last day of the trip (i.e., valid until at least December 18, 2026 for Summer 2026 trips).
-
New passports: Allow a minimum of 2-3 months to obtain.
-
Renewal passports: Allow 2-3 months. Apply at usa.gov/passport.
Do I need a visa?
All necessary visas are included in the trip cost.
Travel in Europe
How do we travel between cities and sites?
We use public transportation as much as possible. We do NOT hire a tour bus. You will navigate metro systems, trains, city buses, funiculars, and intra-European flights like a local. This is an intentional part of the learning experience.
How much walking is involved?
A lot. This trip has been described by past participants as a "walking tour of Italy, Greece, and Turkey." Based on iOS, Android, and fitness tracking apps used by past participants, you will walk 6-10 miles per day (15,000-25,000+ steps) over cobblestone streets, rough paths, unpaved trails, hills, and stairs.
NOTE: This is very different than walking the same distance on a treadmill or sidewalk. A light walking day is typically followed by a heavier one. We do NOT walk 6-10 miles non-stop. Your trip leader has long legs, walks fast, and expects you to keep up.
Benefits: You gain a genuine understanding of how locals live, learn to navigate public transit, eat where locals eat, and build the confidence to travel Europe independently in the future.
Can I arrange additional European travel before or after the trip?
Yes, at your own expense. Make arrangements in advance with the ClassicalTrips office if you want to arrive early or depart late.
4. Lodging
What kind of accommodations do we stay in?
We stay in furnished apartments, leased flats, monasteries, or budget hotels. Think Airbnb or VRBO style. Better than youth hostels, but cheaper than fancy hotels. We typically book entire villas and buildings with large living spaces, good views, and proximity to top sites.
Benefits include:
-
More living space
-
Kitchens
-
Courtyards and common areas
-
Laundry facilities
-
Close access to public transportation
-
Living and experiencing the culture like a local
Drawbacks may include:
-
Shared bathrooms
-
No elevators
-
Possible noisy neighbors
-
No maid service or room service
-
Not always at major intersections
What are the sleeping arrangements?
Typically 4 participants per room, 2 students per bed. You will always have a bed, but it may be a fold-out couch, hideaway, or futon depending on the location. Sheets will be clean.
Students share rooms with students. Adults share rooms with adults. There may occasionally be options for married couples to room together, but this is not guaranteed.
NOTE: There are NO options for private rooms, room upgrades, or specific bed requests.
NOTE: Do NOT bring sheets, pillows, bath towels, or sleeping bags. These are provided.
5. Packing & Luggage
Luggage Rules
How much luggage can I bring?
One (1) carry-on bag per person plus one (1) personal item that fits under the airline seat in front of you. NO checked bags. No large suitcases. No exceptions.
Acceptable carry-on size: 21.65 x 15.74 x 7.87 inches. Check Ryanair's cabin bag requirements if in doubt. Bags exceeding these dimensions will likely incur a $90+ fee per flight each way on European airlines.
NOTE: You will carry your own bags. We do not hire porters. If your bag is too heavy to carry or drag over cobblestone streets, reduce the weight.
A full packing guide with tips from experienced travel pros is provided on this PACKING page.
Clothing
What is the dress code?
Dress modestly and comfortably. Clothing should cover the necessary areas, avoid excessive skin exposure, and refrain from displaying offensive language, inappropriate symbols, or references to alcohol, drugs, or illegal products.
Are there special requirements for Holy sites?
Yes. Churches, mosques, and Vatican sites require the following for both men and women:
-
Knees and upper arms must be covered (no shorts above the knee, no skirts above the knee, no sleeveless tops)
-
No low-cut shirts
-
Men must remove hats before entering; women may keep theirs
Failure to comply may result in being turned away or requirements to purchase a covering on-site (sold at inflated prices). Pants are your safest choice. Long shorts or skirts below the knee are also acceptable.
NOTE: You will be notified in advance of the days we visit holy sites. Dress codes apply to Vatican sites in addition to churches and mosques.
NOTE: No “dress clothes” are needed for any upscale events. Everything is casual.
What temperatures should I expect?
Average temperatures across Italy, Greece, and Turkey range from 50 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Bring sunscreen. Bring a light jacket for cool or inclement weather. Bring a swimsuit for beach days.
Check the weather report a few days before departing the USA for Rome, Athens, Selcuk, & Istanbul.
Shoes & Walking Gear
What shoes should I bring?
A good pair of well-broken-in walking shoes is essential. Break them in several weeks before departure. Typically, one pair of walking shoes and one pair of hiking sandals are all that is needed for the entire trip. If your walking shoes are brand new, pack blister pads.
Laundry
How do I handle laundry?
Pack enough clothes for about 5-7 days. You will have opportunity to do laundry at least once per country during the trip. However, hand-washable, quick-dry items that can be washed & dried in your room are ideal. A packable laundry line is helpful. Laundry is at your own expense. Do not bring laundry detergent; it is available locally.
6. Money & Finances
How much spending money do I need?
On past trips, students have found approximately $250-$350 sufficient for the entire trip. This covers gifts, souvenirs, laundry, snacks, coffee shops, gelato, pastries, beach day expenses, and any meals eaten separately from the group. All basic expenses, including 3 meals per day, are included in your trip price.
What is the best way to carry spending money?
Use a debit or credit card. The best exchange rates are always obtained at ATMs using current exchange rates. A chip card is required and least likely to be hacked overseas. Cash is discouraged.
Important steps before departure:
-
Inform your bank or card provider that you will be withdrawing money in Italy, Greece, and Turkey and the dates of travel.
-
Check with your bank regarding ATM withdrawal fees.
-
Confirm your card works internationally and is activated.
-
Cards on the VISA or MasterCard network are best. Very few places take cards on the Discover network.
Should I bring US dollars or traveler's checks?
No. US dollars typically incur a 20% fee to exchange into Euros or Turkish Lira and is NOT recommended. Traveler's checks are extremely difficult to exchange and are very limited in the locations that accept them. Do NOT bring traveler's checks.
We highly recommend: Do not bring USD cash or Travelers Checks.
Use a credit card or debit card instead.
7. Food & Drink
Meals
What meals are included?
Three meals per day are included in your trip price. Your first trip-provided meal begins after you land in Europe and connect with our group. Your last trip-provided meal ends when you head to the airport to depart from Europe.
Meals to and from Europe are not included.
Typical daily meal schedule:
-
Breakfast (almost always at our lodging): yogurt, fruit, coffee, tea, milk, cereal, bread, butter, jam, boiled eggs, and bakery items. Note that a European breakfast is not like a typical American breakfast.
-
Lunch (1:00 PM - 3:00 PM): This is the larger meal of the day, eaten at great restaurants, food stalls, or other favorite spots known for authentic, quality meals. NOTE: there are a few (3-4) occasions where lunch is not available until 3-4p in the afternoon due to our itinerary. You will be notified in advance on those days. Snacks are suggested.
-
Dinner (8:00 PM - 10:00 PM): Smaller than lunch. Europeans typically eat their evening meal later than American.
-
NOTE: Meal timing is typical for Europe but later in the day than most American mealtimes. You may want a snack between meals at your own expense.
How are meals ordered?
Most meals are served family style. The trip leader orders a variety of foods for the group to share, ensuring you try fantastic foods you may never have experienced. On some occasions, you will be given a cash allotment to order at your table.
What is the food philosophy?
You are not expected to like everything, but you are asked to try everything. You may discover a new favorite!
NOTE: We rarely take you to American chain restaurants overseas. You did not travel to the other side of the world to eat American food.
What if I have dietary restrictions?
We will do our best to accommodate group tastes, but food preparation is out of our control when eating as a group across three countries. If you have stringent dietary needs, you will need to budget for your own food supply. There is no discount or reimbursement for personal food purchased.
NOTE: Read the FOOD ALLERGY CONSIDERATIONS page on the website for additional guidance.
What about beverages?
Water is our beverage of choice 99.9% of the time. Meals include water but do not include soda, coffee, tea, or other beverages. Snacks and additional beverages are at your own expense. Break your soda addiction and drink more water!
Drinking Water Safety
Is the tap water safe to drink?
Yes. Every place we stay has drinkable, potable water. Bring a water bottle for the trip and fill it before heading out each day. You will refill it multiple times throughout the day.
We typically only purchase bottled water in Turkey when required. Elsewhere, we drink tap water as the locals do. It will not make you sick. Plan on drinking a couple of litres per day given the level of daily exertion.
NOTE: Students often lose water bottles. Leave expensive ones at home.

Required Apps
Whatsapp is required!
WhatsApp is required for all trip participants. It is the primary communication tool used during the trip and works over wifi without cutting into your data plan.
-
Download WhatsApp in advance and confirm it works before leaving the USA.
-
A ClassicalTrips group chat link will be provided in advance 2-3 weeks prior to the trip..
-
During the trip, check WhatsApp daily or when notifications pop up for last minute modifications or shifts in our schedule.
-
A small data plan (used only for WhatsApp) can be helpful if you do not have international coverage through your phone carrier.
-
IF your phone is “unlocked”, eSims from companies such as Holafly, JetPac, Airalo provide low cost data.
NOTE: Posting in the WhatsApp group is strictly for trip participants. It is not for family or friends at home to contact the group or make comments.
Recommended Apps
What apps are recommended but not required?
-
Rick Steves Europe App : Free audio tours and helpful tips for trip sites. A recommended list of audio tours is provided on the PACKING and AUDIO TOURS page.
-
Mobile Passport Control (MPC): Free app that streamlines re-entry to the USA by allowing you to submit passport and customs declaration information digitally. Reduces wait times and eliminates paper forms.
-
VPN Service: Essential for handling any financial, confidential, or private information on public wifi overseas. Both free and paid options are available.
-
Cell Phones
What should I do about my cell phone plan?
Inform your carrier in advance that you need international coverage and obtain an international plan before departure. Overseas call and data costs can be very high without a plan. Smartphones with wifi calling are very useful for free messaging and calling back to the USA.
NOTE: Phone use for gaming & social media is discouraged during site visits and meals. Mealtimes and site visits are "no-phone" zones. Talk to your neighbor instead.
9. Health & Safety
How safe are these trips?
Safety is paramount in everything we do. All reasonable and customary precautions are observed at every stage of the trip. You will be stretched and challenged, but you will never be purposely placed in personal danger.
Standard safety procedures include:
-
Trip leaders stay in close contact with the US Embassy & Consulates in each country.
-
The Embassy is informed of our itinerary in advance.
-
Every trip itinerary and participant list is registered with the US State Department before departure.
-
Trippers are advised to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program provided by the US government.
-
Is travel to Turkey safe?
We stay in regular contact with the US Embassy in Istanbul and the US Consulate near our lodging throughout our time in Turkey. We only travel on the western coast of Turkey (the most modern and developed region) and in Istanbul.
Should any State Department concerns arise prior to departure or during the trip, alternate sites in Siena, Venice, Thessaloniki, or a Greek island may be substituted.
What happens if I have a medical emergency?
This is a rare situation, but if a medical emergency occurs, you (and your parents) will need to manage the treatment arrangements and expenses. The ClassicalTrips staff will assist as much as possible and help pursue medical consultation, but cannot abandon the rest of the group.
If a student has a non-emergency illness, they will be left in a safe, secure location with phone access during the day, and their parents will be notified immediately.
What about Covid?
Covid did not affect any trip details on the 2022-2025 trips. We monitor the situation continuously. Please read the "What Ifs of Covid" page on the website for current guidance.
10. Christian Behavior & Conduct
What are the behavior standards on the trip?
As a student-oriented Christian travel group, all participants are expected to follow broadly accepted guidelines for Christian behavior and interaction throughout the entire trip.
All trip participants, both students and adults, must agree to and abide by these guidelines through the duration of the trip.
What is the policy on alcohol, smoking, and drugs?
ClassicalTrips.org practices a strict No Alcohol, No Wine, No Smoking, No Illegal Drugs, No Marijuana policy on all trip experiences. This commitment applies to all participants (parent & student) regardless of personal beliefs, applies whether you are with the group or on your own, and covers both scheduled events and free time.
We have chosen to abide by a strict interpretation of "avoiding the appearance of evil" and "doing nothing that would cause a brother to fall" among all our fellow Christian believers.
NOTE: By joining the trip, you are committing to abstain from these practices for the entirety of the trip. It is our purpose to maintain a Christian witness at all times in all behavior.
Read CLASSICALTRIPS RULES TO LIVE BY on the website for full guidelines.
What is the policy for non-married couples?
Please read the Trip Guidelines section about COUPLES on the website.
11. Chaperones & Group Dynamics
Are students chaperoned during the trip?
Yes. Adult sponsors accompany the group for safety, Christian behavior, and to maximize the international experience. However, it is our goal for students to be able to explore safe sections of each city in approved groups without a chaperone present at all times. This independent exploration is an important part of the adventure and growth process.
Are there beach days?
Plan on one beach day during the Summer trips, typically along the Greek coast or the Rome coast. This generally costs $15-$25 at your own expense for umbrella and lounge chair rental, entry fees, and snacks. Bring a swimsuit. Sunscreen required.
NOTE: European beach standards tend to be less conservative than typical church youth group standards. Modest swim attire is expected.
NOTE: There are typically no beach days on the Spring Break trip due to cooler weather and tighter schedules.
How intense is the trip schedule?
We move at the pace of youth.
12. Miscellaneous Questions
What if I get lost from the group?
Before you head out in each city, we’ll go over your official “I promise I won’t get lost” game plan. This includes:
(1) having a phone number to call if things go sideways,
(2) a photo on your phone of your apartment address (because “it’s the one with the blue door” is not a strategy), and
(3) a quick call to your parents so they know you’re still alive and thriving.
And remember… the police are your friends. Seriously. They like helping confused Americans. 😄
What if I run out of money?
You will not go hungry or sleep on the street. There may be a way for your parents to send funds to the trip leader, which can be transferred to you.
What if I become homesick and want to go home early?
Yes, you can go home early. Typically it costs between $600-$1,000 to change your airline ticket.
What if I overpacked and can't carry all my bags?
Excess goods will be donated to the local economy or the nearest dumpster. Pack light.
Are there pickpockets?
Yes. Europe's popular tourist sites do attract pickpockets. Read the articles on Avoiding Pickpockets linked on the website. Keep your valuables secure at all times. Phone are the most desirable!
Is college credit available?
Yes. Some colleges and universities are willing to grant academic credit for participation in this trip, given the significant number of historic sites visited related to Western culture and its roots. Details are on the COLLEGE CREDIT page of the website.
Who is Global Quest Inc.?
Global Quest Inc. is the parent organization of ClassicalTrips.org. ClassicalTrips.org is the educational arm of Global Quest Inc., which equips students and adults in Christian education, a Biblical worldview, and a passion for world missions.
13. Online Meetings & Contact
Are there pre-trip meetings?
Yes. Two online conference call meetings are held prior to departure. Recordings are posted to the website after each call. The final call is held a couple of weeks before departure.
14. Is there any suggested Trip Preparation?
-
Do a brief study of Greco-Roman history
-
Learn how to read a Metro/subway map
-
Learn your site well - Be ready to explain the history, significance, and big story of the site you chose.
-
Pack light and smart - Bring only what you can comfortably carry. Good walking shoes, modest clothing, and a few versatile layers matter more than extra stuff.
-
Get your phone ready for travel - Make sure you have WhatsApp, offline maps, charging gear, and a phone plan or setup that will work overseas.
-
Prepare physically - These trips involve a lot of walking, stairs, uneven ground, and long days. Start walking more before the trip.
-
Come with the right attitude - Be teachable, flexible, on time, and ready to serve the group. A great trip depends as much on attitude as on knowledge.
-
Think beyond facts - Do not just memorize information. Look for the moral, spiritual, historical, and human lessons that make each place memorable.
